The school system in Sweden is well developed and holds high international standard. Luleå university of technology has world leading competence and research in several areas. Research is conducted in close collaboration with companies such as Bosch, Ericsson, Scania, LKAB, SKF and leading international universities, creating global social benefit with our arctic region as starting point.

Pre-school and nursery schools

Childcare services are available for all children aged one and over, provided they have a Swedish personal identity number. Parents pay a fee based on household income and the child’s attendance. Get in touch with the municipality of your choise for more information. Pre-schools and schools usually has different pedagogical profiles. The local municipalities often has good information on their websites.

Schools

Between ages 6-16, children go to compulsory comprehensive school. After completing the ninth grade, 90% continue to a three-year upper secondary school (gymnasium) with most programs leading to a vocational diploma and to qualifications for studies at a university or university college. All education provided by the state is free.

Swedish as a second language

Children whose native language is not Swedish may be entitled to lessons in Swedish as a second language. Check with the municipality of your choice.
